Profile of the School :
The M.Sc. course in Biotechnology was started in SOS Biochemistry, Jiwaji University from the academic year 1996 with seed money of Rs. 33 lakhs from University Grants Commission, New Delhi under emerging areas. The M.Sc. Biotechnology course was made a regular course of the University from the academic year 1997-98 onwards (vide notification no. F/Dev/97/2405 dated the 15th May, 1997). Thereafter, the program was given the status of School of Studies in the year 2006. The School offers Master’s and Doctoral program in Biotechnology. So far seventeen batches of M.Sc. Biotechnology students have successfully completed their post graduation. The course curriculum is updated from time to time to infuse the latest developments of the subject and to develop industry oriented curriculum. The teaching program is strengthened by invited lectures from senior teachers and scientists from other Universities and National laboratories such as Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Mumbai, Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow and Jaypee Institute of Information Technology, Noida etc.

The research areas of focus in the School include genomics, proteomics, pharmaceutical biotechnology, animal cell culture and plant biotechnology. The School has received funding for research from various agencies such as University Grants Commission, Madhya Pradesh Council of Science and Technology, Madhya Pradesh Council of Biotechnology, Defense Research and Development Establishment etc. The school facilitates academic collaborations with various national laboratories for placement and project training. The school has proactive calendar of high quality academic activities like students’ seminar, completive events and continuous internal assessments etc.

Teaching Methodologies:
A variety of teaching methods are adopted including interactive class lectures, seminars, practical classes, assignments etc. using latest tools of teaching like LCD projectors, Over head projectors in addition to green board teaching.

Internet Facility:
The School has well equipped core-i3 processor based computer facility with UGC-INFONET internet connectivity dedicated for students

Library:
The departmental library has large number of subject related latest edition reference and text books for student’s access moreover to central library facility.

Academic Activities:
National conferences, workshops, competitive events are conducted by the School on a regular basis to highlight latest trends in Biotechnology and to initiate interaction of students with eminent academicians of national and international repute.

NET- Qualified Students:
Almost every year 2-4 students of the School qualify NET/SLET/GATE examinations. Till date more than 47 students of the School have cleared such examinations and are doing research at various national and international institutes. Few students of our School are the contender of prestigious Shyama Prasad Mukherjee scholarship.

Placement:
The students passed out from this department are absorbed by well known companies like Cadilla Pharma, Fresenius Kabi oncology limited, Reliance Biotech, Kiagen Biotech etc. in India. Equally some of the students are absorbed as scientist at DBT-New Delhi, CDRI-Lucknow, DIPAS-New Delhi, DRDE-Gwalior etc. and Internationally at NIH-USA, University of Reading-UK, Academia Sinica-Taiwan to name a few. Majority of the students are working at various prestigious research Institutes like Bhabha Atomic Research Centre- Mumbai, IISC-Bangalore, ICGEB-New Delhi, CCMB-Hyderabad, NCL-Pune, CRDI-Lucknow, IIT- Kharagpur, etc. for pursuing doctoral degree.

M. Sc. Biotechnology (Two years / Four semester)

Eligibility : Graduation with 50% marks with Biotechnology/Biochemistry or Graduation with 50% marks with Biology/Botany/EnvironmentalSciences/MicrobiologyZoology/Pharmacy/ Medicine/Instrumentation with Chemistry as one of the Compulsory subject.
